Many people travel through the city on the Maputo Corridor. This is a major trade path that connects Pretoria to Maputo.

The area has a very long history of people living there. Archaeologists found rock art and evidence from the Iron Age. They also found farming settlements and pottery from the 6th to 17th century. The city was officially founded in 1895 by three brothers from the Nel family. They used the area to graze their cattle during the winter. Later, the city became a key stop for the Eastern Railway. This railway helped move goods from the goldfields to the coast.

In the past, the city was known as Nelspruit. In October 2009, the government changed the name to Mbombela. This is the name of the local municipality. The name Mbombela comes from the Siswati language. It means "many people together in a small space."

The city also has the Lowveld National Botanical Garden. This garden covers 154 hectares along the Crocodile River. It holds about 500 different types of local plants.
