Near the city, you can find many rivers. The Hex River flows north and carries water to the Bospoort Dam. This dam provides water for the people and the big mines. The area also has many beautiful nature reserves nearby. You can visit the Pilanesberg National Park, which sits in an old volcano.

Life in Rustenburg is shaped by the ground beneath it. The city is very famous for platinum mining. This kind of mining began in 1929 after a man named Hans Merensky found the Platinum Reef. One mine is located just 3 km from the town centre. This metal is very important for the world. Mining is a huge part of how the city works. Many people in the region earn money from these mining operations. However, mining also brings hard jobs and changes to the land. Some old citrus farms have disappeared because of pollution from the mines.

Rustenburg has a very long and complex history. Before European settlers arrived, Setswana-speaking tribes lived in the area. Later, groups like the Bafokeng people settled there too. In the early 1800s, there were many wars with a group called the Matebele. The Boers and the Tswana people worked together to defeat them. When the Boers settled, they named the place Rustenburg. This name means "Resting Town" in Dutch. They felt they could finally rest after many violent battles.

The city has grown much larger over the years. In 2011, there were about 549,575 people living there. By the 2016 census, that number grew to 626,522 people. Today, it is the fastest-growing city in the North West province. Most people in the city are Black, and many speak Setswana. Most residents are also part of the Christian faith. The city is a place where many different groups live together. It is a place that is always changing and growing.

Rustenburg is also a place for big world events. In 2010, the city helped host the FIFA World Cup. It was close to the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng. The England national football team even stayed here during the tournament.

The weather here stays quite pleasant because of the high altitude. Summers are warm, but they are not too hot. Winters are mild, though you might see frost at night. It is a place of big mountains, deep mines, and exciting history.
