The Mfecane was a period of intense change in Southern Africa. It involved many wars and large movements of people. Most scholars focus on the years between 1810 and 1840. During this time, many groups had to leave their homes. Some people think as many as 2 million died. However, many modern scholars now debate those large numbers. They look at other reasons for the changes instead.

Many things worked together to cause this upheaval. Trade in ivory helped some leaders gain great wealth. They used this money to build more power. This power helped them control more land and people. At the same time, the weather became very difficult. Large volcanic eruptions in 1809 and 1815 caused deep droughts. These droughts made it hard to grow food. People struggled to find enough grain and livestock to eat.

Leaders often fought to protect their own people from hunger. They would raid other groups to get cattle and grain. This helped their loyal followers survive the hard times. A famous leader during this time was King Shaka. He led the Zulu people to build a very large state. Other groups like the Ndwandwe also fought for control. These fights caused a chain reaction of movement across the land. Many people fled to find safer places to live.

Different groups moved to many different parts of Africa. The Ndwandwe people were led by King Zwide kaLanga. After fights with the Zulu, some Ndwandwe groups moved away. Leaders like Soshangane and Zwangendaba led people to new regions. They helped start the Gaza Kingdom in the northeast. In the interior, the Griqua and Korana groups also moved. These groups were often part of the trade in cattle and slaves. They moved through the Orange River regions.

These big changes helped create the world we see today. The Mfecane helped form new states and new identities. For example, the Swazi Kingdom grew during this era. The Mpondo Kingdom also became a major power. Even though there was much fighting, new ways of living began. People built new institutions and new ways to live together. The map of southeastern Africa was changed forever by these events.
