The Xhosa Wars were a series of nine conflicts that lasted for one hundred years. They took place between 1779 and 1879 in South Africa.

These wars involved the Xhosa Kingdom and the British Empire. They also involved Trekboers from the Dutch colonial empire. The fighting happened mostly in the Eastern Cape region. Much of the conflict was about land and cattle.

Tensions grew as different groups moved into the same areas.

Many problems started because of how land was used. The Xhosa people were already living there and herding cattle.

European settlers began moving east into these valleys. In 1779, the Dutch East India Company set a border at the Great Fish River. However, many settlers ignored this boundary line. This led to the First Frontier War. Conflicts often broke out when people disagreed about cattle theft.

These disagreements caused many small fights to turn into larger wars.

Different leaders made many important choices during these wars. In 1780, a governor named Baron van Plettenberg declared the river a border. He did not talk to the Xhosa people about this first. He sent leaders like Adreaan Van Jaarsveld to move the Xhosa east. During one meeting, Van Jaarsveld used tobacco to distract the Xhosa. While they were distracted, his men shot at them. This event caused many deaths, including a chief named Jalamba.

Later, a prophet named Nxele led a large force in 1819. He promised he could turn bullets into water.

Many specific places and names are part of this history. The Zuurveld was a district between two rivers where much fighting happened.

In 1811, Colonel John Graham led troops to push the Xhosa back. A town called Grahamstown grew near his headquarters. During the Fifth War, a battle called the Battle of Amalinde took place. King Ngqika fought his uncle Ndlambe in this battle. King Ngqika lost about 500 men during that fight.

The British also created a place called Queen Adelaide Province.

These wars changed how people lived in South Africa forever. The borders of the land moved many times during the century.

New groups like the Fengu people moved into the area too. They were fleeing from the Zulu armies. The fighting caused many people to lose their homes and cattle. Even though the wars were hard, they shaped the modern country. Today, monuments stand to remember the people who fell.
