It grew into a large empire that ruled much of the region. The land stretched along the Indian Ocean coast. It reached from the Tugela River to the Pongola River. This area is now known as the KwaZulu-Natal province. The kingdom's history is full of strong leaders and big changes.

Shaka was a key leader who changed how the Zulu lived. He was the son of Chief Senzangakhona. Shaka first fought as a warrior for a leader named Dingiswayo. After Dingiswayo died around 1816, Shaka became the leader of the Mthethwa alliance. He grew his small clan into a force of 45,000 people. Shaka created a standing army called the amabutho. He also gave his soldiers short stabbing spears instead of long throwing spears. These new tools and training made his army very strong.

After Shaka, the leadership of the Zulu changed many times. His half-brother Dingane became king in 1828 after a plot to kill Shaka. Dingane later had many clashes with Boer settlers called Voortrekkers. One leader, Piet Retief, tried to negotiate for land in 1838. However, the deal ended in violence and many deaths. After Dingane fled, King Mpande took over the throne. Mpande ruled for many years and kept peace with the Boers. In 1856, a civil war happened between Mpande's sons, Cetshwayo and Mbuyazi.

King Cetshwayo became the ruler in 1872. His reign faced a major challenge from the British. In 1878, a British official named Sir Henry Bartle Frere gave Cetshwayo an ultimatum. The British wanted the Zulu army to disband. This led to the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879. The Zulu army won a famous victory at the Battle of Isandlwana in January.

They killed more than 1,000 British soldiers that day. But the British regrouped and eventually won at the Battle of Ulundi.

Following the war, the Zulu Kingdom was divided and changed. The British took control of the land. Later, the area became part of the Union of South Africa. Even though the empire ended, the Zulu culture remained strong. Many leaders followed, such as Dinuzulu and Solomon kaDinuzulu. Today, the Zulu people still have a monarch. The current king is Misuzulu Sinqobile. He serves as the monarch of the KwaZulu-Natal province.
