This war happened in Southern Africa during 1879. It was fought between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. A British official named Sir Henry Bartle Frere wanted to bring more control to the region. He gave King Cetshwayo a list of rules called an ultimatum.

His main group had about 7,800 men. This group included regular soldiers and local African troops. They moved through the area during the rainy season. The rain made their progress very slow. The British expected to catch the Zulu warriors while they were farming.

Most Zulus used traditional weapons like iron spears and cowhide shields. Some Zulus also had old muskets and rifles. The British had modern Martini-Henry rifles and mountain guns.

Even with better guns, the British were not prepared for the size of the Zulu force. The Zulus moved quickly to surprise the British troops.

The Zulu warriors used a clever plan to win. They used a formation called 'horns and chest of the buffalo.'

This meant they used parts of their army to surround the British. The Zulu army attacked the sides of the British lines. This movement helped them overwhelm the soldiers. The battle was a big victory for the Zulu Kingdom. It was the worst defeat the British Army had faced against a local force with less technology.

The fighting caused many deaths on both sides. Over 1,300 British troops died in the battle. The Zulu army also lost between 1,000 and 3,000 people. This loss changed how the war continued. The British government felt embarrassed by the defeat. They decided to send many more soldiers to the area. This led to a much larger second invasion of Zululand. The victory at Isandlwana did not stop the war, but it changed how it was fought.
