The Anglo-Ashanti wars were a series of five major conflicts in West Africa. These wars took place between 1824 and 1900. They involved the Ashanti Empire, located in the Akan interior of the Gold Coast. The Ashanti fought against the British Empire and its African allies.

At first, the Ashanti won several battles. However, the British eventually won the wars. By 1900, the British had taken full control of the Ashanti Empire. This changed how the region was ruled for a long time.

Many smaller arguments happened before the main wars began. The British and the Ashanti disagreed about land and money. The Ashanti believed they were the leaders of the whole Gold Coast. They wanted the British to pay rent to live in coastal forts. The British refused to pay this money.

Tensions grew as the two sides disagreed. In 1821, the British government took direct control of the coast. This happened after a report showed that local merchants were not following the law. A new governor named Sir Charles MacCarthy arrived to lead.

A single event sparked the first major war in 1823. A dispute between a British soldier and an Ashanti trader turned into violence. The soldier, Sergeant Kujo Otetfo, insulted the Ashanti king. This was a very serious insult to the Ashanti people. Shortly after, the sergeant was killed by an Ashanti war party.

This event set the country on a path toward war. The British decided to send a large force to fight back.

The first big battle happened in January 1824 at Nsamankow. The Ashanti army had about 10,000 men. They were very disciplined and marched in perfect order. They used muskets called "Long Danes." Since they often lacked bullets, they used nails instead.

The British force was smaller and was caught in a trap. Governor MacCarthy was killed during the battle. The British suffered a heavy defeat and had to retreat to the coast. It was a very difficult time for the British soldiers.

In 1826, the British fought the Ashanti again near Accra. This time, the British used new weapons called Congreve rockets. These rockets made loud explosions and left bright trails in the sky. The noise and the flying metal pieces scared the Ashanti army. This helped the British win the battle and stop the attack.

Eventually, a treaty was signed in 1831 to set a border. This border was the Pra River. The fighting would continue in smaller ways for many more years.
