The New Zealand Wars were a series of conflicts from 1845 to 1872.

These fights happened between the colonial government and its allies against various Māori groups. The main cause was a disagreement over land ownership. European settlers wanted more land for farms and houses. Many Māori leaders wanted to protect their ancestral lands. This tension grew as the government tried to buy more territory. These disagreements eventually turned into large-scale fighting across the islands.

Much of the trouble came from the Treaty of Waitangi. This was a famous agreement signed in 1840. There were two different versions of the treaty. The English version said the British had sovereignty. Sovereignty means the power to rule a land. However, the Māori version used the word "kawanatanga." This word meant "governance" instead of full control. Because the words were different, both sides had different ideas. This confusion led to many arguments about who held power.

Fighting started in small ways during the 1840s. In 1843, a clash happened in the Wairau Valley. This was the only major fight in the South Island. Later, in 1845, the Flagstaff War broke out in the north. A leader named Hōne Heke cut down a British flagstaff. He did this to show he disagreed with British rule.

These early battles showed how much tension existed between the groups.

By the 1860s, the wars became much larger and more intense.

The government wanted to stop the Kīngitanga movement. This was a movement to establish a Māori King. To win, the government brought in many British troops. At the peak, there were about 18,000 British soldiers. They faced about 4,000 Māori warriors.

Māori used clever tactics to defend themselves. They built fortified villages called pā. They also used bunkers to hide from heavy cannons.

The wars changed New Zealand forever. Many people died during these many years of fighting. In the Waikato area, about 1,800 Māori and 800 Europeans died. The government also passed laws to take land from Māori. They used this land to pay for the cost of the wars. This made many people very angry. The fighting finally slowed down after 1872. These events remain a very important part of New Zealand history.
