The Black War was a period of violent conflict in Tasmania. This island was called Van Diemen's Land at that time. The war happened between British colonists and Aboriginal Tasmanians. It lasted from the mid-1820s until 1832. This conflict led to the near-destruction of the Aboriginal population.

Many historians today study this time to understand the past. Some even call it a genocide. Others argue the colonial leaders did not intend to destroy the people.

The conflict grew because the two groups lived in different ways. The British settlers arrived in 1803 at Risdon Cove.

They brought sheep and cattle to the land. This expansion took over the hunting grounds of the Aboriginal people. As the native game disappeared, Aboriginal people faced hunger. They sometimes took food from settler homes to survive.

This struggle for land and food caused the fighting to grow.

Violence became much more common after 1824. The British population grew from 2,000 to 24,000 people. This growth meant more land was used for farming. Aboriginal attacks on colonists increased from about two per year to 18 per year. Settlers also kidnapped Aboriginal women and children. This caused deep anger and led to many reprisals.

In 1828, the British government declared martial law. This meant the military could use force to move people.

In 1830, the British tried a large military move. They called it the Black Line. The goal was to force Aboriginal nations out of settled areas. This plan did not work as the leaders hoped. Later, a man named George Augustus Robinson helped.

He led "Friendly Missions" in 1830 and 1831. He worked with Aboriginal negotiators to find a surrender. By January 1832, martial law was finally ended.

The war changed the lives of the Aboriginal people forever. Most survivors were moved to Flinders Island between 1832 and 1835. They lived at the Wybalenna Aboriginal Mission.

Many people died there from infectious diseases. By 1847, only 46 people remained at the mission. Today, some people suggest calling this the "Tasmanian War." A historian named Lyndall Ryan has asked for a memorial to honor everyone who died.
