It sits just south of the Australian mainland. The Bass Strait is the wide body of water that separates them. The main island is the 26th largest island in the whole world. It is surrounded by about 1,000 smaller islands. Tasmania is the smallest state in Australia. It also has the fewest people living there.

The land itself is very special and looks different everywhere. Much of the island is made of a rock called dolerite. This rock forms huge mountains and steep cliffs. You can see these shapes at Mount Wellington near Hobart.

In the southwest, there are sharp ridges made of quartzite. These peaks can look like they have snow on them all year. Other parts of the island have granite or limestone with deep caves.

Aboriginal people have lived on the island for a very long time. Some evidence shows they arrived about 42,000 years ago. They lived in nine different nations across the land. They called the island Trouwunna.

About 11,700 years ago, rising sea levels flooded the land. This created the Bass Strait and separated them from the mainland. Today, many people there identify as Palawa or Pakana.

European explorers arrived much later in history. A Dutch explorer named Abel Tasman saw the island in 1642.

He named it after his sponsor, Anthony van Diemen. In 1803, the British began to settle the island permanently. They used it as a penal settlement for convicts. This means they sent people there as punishment. Many people were sent to places like Port Arthur. The island was called Van Diemen's Land for a long time. It finally became Tasmania in 1856.

Today, Tasmania is a wonderful place for many different activities. Many people live in the capital city, Hobart.

The state is famous for its nature and eco-tourism. About 42% of the land is protected in reserves. This includes many national parks and World Heritage Sites. People also work in farming, fishing, and healthcare. It is a very important place for growing food and seafood.
