Bass Strait is a large stretch of water in Australia.

It sits between the mainland and the island state of Tasmania. This waterway connects the Great Australian Bight to the Tasman Sea. It is also the only sea path into Port Phillip Bay. Many islands sit within these waters. There are more than 50 islands in total.

Some of the biggest islands are King Island and Flinders Island. The Kent Group is another important group of islands. These islands help make the area very special.

Long ago, the land looked very different.

About 40,000 years ago, people could walk from the mainland to Tasmania. They used a wide land bridge called the Bassian Plain. This plain connected the southern Victoria coast to northern Tasmania. As the last ice age ended, the sea levels began to rise. This flooding happened around 8,000 years ago. The rising water turned the plain into the Bass Strait. This event left Tasmania as an isolated island.

European explorers found the strait much later. Captain Abel Tasman may have seen it in 1642. He was looking for a huge southern continent. Later, Captain James Cook sailed near it in 1770. He was not sure if the lands were one piece. The strait is named after George Bass. He and Matthew Flinders sailed across it in 1798. In 1800, Governor John Hunter gave it its official name. This helped people know exactly where the water was.

Traveling through the strait can be a hard job. The water is often very rough and wild. Strong currents meet here from the Indian Ocean and the Tasman Sea. These currents create powerful storm waves. Many ships were lost on the rocks and reefs in the 1800s. To keep sailors safe, people built lighthouses. A light was built on Deal Island in 1848. The Cape Otway Lighthouse was also lit in 1848. Another light was lit at Cape Wickham in 1861.

Today, the strait is useful for many reasons. People find oil and gas under the seabed. Most of these fields are in the Gippsland Basin. For example, the Halibut Field was found in 1967. The Cobia Field was found in 1972. Some gas is sent through long pipes to big plants.

These plants are in places like Longford and Geelong. The strait also has many protected marine areas. These help keep the sea life safe and healthy.
