It sits along the southern coast of mainland Australia. Much of this area lies south of the Nullarbor Plain. This plain is a very flat, dry place.

Some people say the bay is part of the Indian Ocean. The Australian Hydrographic Service says it is part of the Southern Ocean. This large area of water is a very important part of the Earth.

Nature works in a special way here to create life. Deep ocean water moves up toward the coast. This process is called upwelling. It brings nutrients from the deep ocean floor to the surface.

These nutrients help tiny living things called zooplankton grow. These tiny creatures are the bottom of the food chain. They support many fish, like sardines and anchovies. Even young southern bluefin tuna swim here to eat.

This place has a very long history. It formed about 50 million years ago. This happened when a supercontinent named Gondwana broke apart. This event separated Antarctica from Australia.

European explorers first saw the area in 1627. A Dutch navigator named François Thijssen sailed its western edges. Later, an English navigator named Matthew Flinders mapped it accurately in 1802.

There are many amazing things to see and find. The coastline has cliffs that are up to 100 meters high. These cliffs are great for watching whales. Southern right whales come to the Head of Bight to breed in winter.

You might also see the Australian sea lion near the cliffs. These animals are very important to protect. The area is also home to over 1,200 species of seaweed.

People have used the Bight for many different things. Fishing for tuna and shellfish is a common job. Since the 1960s, some companies have wanted to find oil and gas there.

This has caused a lot of debate. Many people worry about the environment and the animals. They want to make sure the ocean stays safe for the future. Towns like Ceduna and Eucla help people reach this coast.
