The Nullarbor Plain is a massive, flat part of southern Australia.

It sits right along the Great Australian Bight coast. To its north, you will find the Great Victoria Desert. The name Nullarbor comes from Latin words meaning "no trees." This is a very good description of the land. It is a dry and semi-arid place.

Most of the area is very empty and wide. It stretches across the border of South Australia and Western Australia.

The ground here is very special to scientists. The plain is the world's largest single area of limestone bedrock. This rock was actually a shallow seabed a long time ago. You can find tiny skeletons of sea life inside the stone. These include things like red algae and tiny shells called foraminifera.

Over millions of years, the land was pushed upward. Wind and rain have since worn the surface down. This is why the terrain is so extremely flat today.

Many people have traveled through this land over the years. Indigenous Australian groups, like the Mirning and Yinyila, lived here for a long time. They called the area Oondiri, which means "the waterless." Later, Dutch explorers named the coast after Pieter Nuyts in the 1600s. In 1841, Edward John Eyre became the first European to cross it. His journey was very hard because of a lack of water. He and a man named Wylie eventually reached Albany in June 1841.

Life on the plain can be quite extreme. It is often called a "cold desert" or semi-arid zone. Summer days can be scorching hot. In the winter, nights often drop well below freezing.

Despite the heat, the area has many amazing living things. You can find red kangaroos and dingoes roaming the scrub. Some animals, like spiders and beetles, live in the dark caves. There is even a rare masked owl that lives in the caves.

Today, the Nullarbor is a place for both farming and protection. Some people raise sheep on the edges of the plain. The Rawlinna Station is the largest sheep station in the world.

Other parts are kept wild to protect nature. In 2013, a huge area became the Nullarbor Wilderness Protection Area. This helps keep the 390 species of plants safe. It also protects the many habitats for rare birds and animals. Visitors can even explore some of the famous caves.
