geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Western Plateau is a huge part of Australia. It is the largest drainage division on the continent. This means it is a massive area where water flows. It covers almost two-thirds of the land in Australia. This area sits inside three different places. These are Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory. It is a very old part of the Earth. It is made from the remains of the Gondwana rock shield.

Life in this region works in a very dry way. Most of the land is a desert. You will see flat sandy ground or stony ground. There are not many plants here. You might see some small shrubs. You might also see some tussock grasses. These plants grow in a sparse covering. Rain is very hard to find in this place. It rarely falls on the land.

Water is very special in the Western Plateau. Surface water is almost always absent. It only appears after heavy rain falls. There are only a few permanent waterholes. These are spots where water stays all year. The amount of rain is hard to predict. It changes from one area to another. The average rainfall is quoted at 250 mm per year. This is a very small amount of water.

This plateau has a very long history. It is part of the ancient Gondwana shield. This shield is a very old piece of rock. The plateau stretches from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Onslow. It also covers the cities of Perth and Albany. The land is very old and very vast. It is a place of ancient stones.

Living here can be a hard job for people. Because of this, few people live on the plateau. The climate is very dry and tough. Cold winds blow from Antarctica during the summer. The area also gets steady rain in the winter. These weather patterns make it a difficult place. It is a land of big spaces and old rocks. It is a truly unique part of our world.
