The Deccan Plateau is a huge, rocky land in southern India.

It covers a massive area of the Indian subcontinent. The plateau is shaped like an upside-down triangle. It sits south of the Vindhya and Satpura mountain ranges. To the sides, the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats mark its borders.

These mountains separate the high plateau from the coastal plains. Most of the land belongs to the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

This landscape was shaped by amazing things happening deep underground. Long ago, near the end of the Cretaceous period, massive volcanoes erupted here.

These eruptions released huge amounts of lava. This lava cooled and formed many thick layers of dark rock called basalt. We call this area the Deccan Traps. This was one of the largest volcanic events ever seen on land. The eruption likely released much ash and dust into the air. This could have even changed the weather for the whole world.

History shows that many different people have lived here for ages. Carbon dating shows that ancient cultures lived in the region as far back as 8000 BCE.

People used iron tools here starting around 1000 BCE. For a long time, many strong kingdoms ruled the plateau. These included the Cholas, the Pallavas, and the Satavahanas. Later, the Vijayanagara Empire and the Maratha Empire held power here. For nearly two hundred years, the British Raj also controlled the region.

Nature works in a very interesting way on the plateau. The Western Ghats act like a giant wall against the wind.

When moist air hits the mountains, it rises and turns into rain. This rain falls on the coast, but the air becomes dry by the time it crosses the mountains. This makes the plateau much drier than the seaside. Because the land slopes gently toward the east, many big rivers flow that way. The Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri rivers all flow toward the Bay of Bengal.

The plateau is a busy place for both nature and people. Many animals like Bengal tigers and Indian elephants live in the woods.

The land is also full of useful things like iron, coal, and mica. People speak many different languages here, such as Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi. The region is very important to India's history and its modern states. It remains a vital part of the country's geography today.
