The Kaveri is a major river in Southern India.

It is the third largest river in the region, following the Godavari and Krishna rivers. The river flows through the states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. It also passes through the union territory of Puducherry. This river is a vital lifeline for the many people living in its basin. The river is considered sacred by many people in Southern India. It is even known as one of the seven holy rivers of the country.

The river begins its journey at Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri range. This source is located in the Kodagu district of Karnataka.

From these high hills, the water flows east across the Deccan Plateau. It creates beautiful rapids and falls along its path. One famous spot is the Shivanasamudra Falls, which is one of the largest in India. The river eventually splits into different branches. One part is called the Kollidam River. Finally, the water flows into the Bay of Bengal near Poompuhar.

History and stories are tied deeply to this water. In ancient Tamil books, people called the river Ponni. This means "the golden one" because of the fine silt it leaves behind.

Some religious texts say the river was created by a crow. Other names include Daksina gaṅgā, which means "Ganges of the South." Many people worship the river as the goddess Kaveri. It has supported many different kingdoms throughout history.

Many different living things call this basin home. The area has forests, grasslands, and many farms.

You might see tigers, elephants, or leopards in the wild areas. Birds like the painted stork and the spot-billed pelican live near the water. Even crocodiles and otters live in the river. The river is used for many jobs today. It helps farmers grow rice and sugarcane. Many dams, like the Mettur Dam, also help make electricity for homes.

Because the river is so important, people sometimes disagree about it. For many years, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have had disputes. They argue over how much water each state should get to use. This issue has been studied by the government for a long time. The river stays flowing all year because of the monsoon rains. These rains come from the South-West in Karnataka and the North-East in Tamil Nadu. This cycle keeps the river moving through the dry seasons.
