The Kerala backwaters are a huge web of water in south-western India. They sit in the state of Kerala along the Malabar coast. This system includes many lakes, rivers, and canals. These waterways run parallel to the Arabian Sea.

The network is made of more than 34 backwaters. It includes five large lakes that are linked together. Many rivers flow down from the Western Ghats mountains to feed them. This massive system stretches across almost half the length of Kerala.

The water here is very special because it is brackish. This means fresh water from rivers meets salt water from the sea. To help farmers, a barrage was built near Thanneermukkom. This structure stops salt water from moving too far inland. This keeps the water fresh for irrigation.

This mix of water creates a unique home for many living things. You can see crabs, frogs, and mudskippers in the water. Many birds like kingfishers and cormorants live here too. You might even spot otters or turtles near the banks.

People have used these waters for a very long time. In the past, people used boats called kettuvallams to carry rice. These were large grain barges with thatched roofs. Today, many of these boats are used for tourism. They are now like floating cottages for visitors.
