This area is an exclave, which means it is a piece of land separated from the rest of the country. The town sits at the tip of the Musandam Peninsula. It is right by the Strait of Hormuz. It also borders the United Arab Emirates. Some people call it the "Norway of Arabia." This is because of the rocky, craggy inlets and dry mountains.

The history of Khasab goes back a long time. The Portuguese built Khasab Fort at the start of the 17th century. They were very strong at sea during that time. Most forts are built on high hills for defense. However, this fort was built to help ships. It served as a supply point for water and dates. This helped Portuguese ships sailing through the strait. Today, the town is safe from floods because of three large dams.

Khasab is a busy place for trade. It sits very close to Iran. This makes it an interesting spot for moving goods. Sailors bring sheep and goats from Iran to the local port. They then send these animals to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. On the way back, boats carry electronic goods and cigarettes. This work can be dangerous. The boats must dodge many large oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The crossing is tricky because the boats are often piled very high.

The weather in Khasab is a hot desert climate. The summers are very hot and humid. The winters are mild and pleasant. Most of the rain falls between December and March. The heat can be very intense here. In June 2011, the airport recorded a very high minimum temperature. This was a world record for a calendar day. It stayed hot until another place broke the record in 2012. Khasab is a place where the desert meets the sea.
