The map shows where the city sits near the coast. Some people wonder where the name Bushehr comes from. It might mean "father of the city." It could also be a short name for Bokht-Ardashir. No one is quite sure yet.

Long ago, Bushehr was just a small fishing village. Everything changed in 1734 because of a leader named Nader Shah. He wanted to build a fleet of ships for the Persian Gulf. He even brought heavy wood from forests 1,000 km away. This helped him build a huge warship. After Nader Shah died in 1747, the city stayed a famous port for 150 years. The Dutch and British companies even set up trading posts there.

Life in the city has some hard parts. The summer heat and humidity can be very strong. Even with windcatchers on the houses, the water in the wells is salty. In the 1800s, the water near the shore was quite shallow. Large European ships could not dock at the land. They had to stay four km away in the bay. People and goods moved to the shore using small boats.

Bushehr is a place where many people live and work. The city has grown a lot over the years. In 2006, there were 161,674 people living there. By 2011, that number grew to 195,222 people. The 2016 census showed that 223,504 people lived in the city. Most of these people live in over 63,000 different households. It is a large and active part of the country.

Today, the area near the city is used for making power. There is a nuclear power plant only 12 km from Bushehr. This project has a long and complicated history. Work first began in 1975 with a company from Germany. Later, Russia signed a contract to help build a reactor. This plant began adding electricity to the national grid in September 2011. It is a major way the region gets its energy.
