It sits on the southern coast along the Persian Gulf. This city is the capital of the Hormozgan province. It is located near the narrow Strait of Hormuz. This spot is very important for ships traveling through the area. The city also serves as the main base for the Iranian Navy.

The land around the city is mostly flat. To the north, you can see Mt. Geno and Mt. Pooladi. A river called the Shoor rises on Mt. Geno. This river sometimes flows into the Persian Gulf near the city. The weather is a hot desert climate. Summers are very hot and the air feels quite wet. This is because the warm waters of the sea bring moisture to the land.

This place has a very long history. The earliest records go back to the time of Darius the Great. He was a king of the Achaemenid Empire. Long ago, the city was known by different names. One name was Gameroon, which might mean "shrimp" in Persian. In the 1500s, the Portuguese took control of the city. They called it Comorão because of the crabs and lobsters on the shore. Later, Shah Abbas the Great took it back in 1614. He renamed it Bandar Abbas, which means "Port of Abbas."
