The ground on the island is very interesting to look at. Scientists think the island is a salt diapir. This means it is made of ancient sea salt deposits. Over many thousands of years, this salt rose up through the earth. It can flow and squeeze just like ice under pressure. The island is about 600 million years old. It has been above the water for about 50,000 years.

People have visited this island for a very long time. The oldest evidence shows people lived there over 40,000 years ago. They left behind stone tools at a site called Chand-Derakht. In the year 1300, a ruler moved to the island to stay safe from attacks. Later, the Portuguese took control of the island in 1507.

Nature on the island is both salty and colorful. The beaches have a reddish color called Golak. This red earth is used by people for cooking and making art. You can also find a forest of mangrove trees here. These trees live in the salty tidal areas. Some of them stay under the sea water and still survive. The island is also a great place to see birds.
