It sits near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. The island is part of Iran, but its ownership is still a big disagreement. The United Arab Emirates also says it should own the island. This makes Abu Musa a very important and strategic place.

Because the water nearby is so deep, large oil tankers must pass between Abu Musa and the Tunb islands. This makes the area a key spot for ships traveling through the gulf.

The island has a unique landscape and climate. It is warm and humid, which feels different from other islands in the area.

The highest point on the island is called Mount Halva. While the island has many different kinds of living things, the soil is not good for growing food. This means people cannot easily farm the land. Instead, most people who live there work in the fishing industry. The island is also home to its own airport to help people travel.

History shows that many different groups have been linked to this land. In the past, old Persian maps called the island "Waterland" or "green land."

Some Arabic sources say the name comes from a man named Abu Musa al-Ash'ari. He lived on the island in 643 CE. For a long time, the ruler of Sharjah controlled the island. Later, the United Kingdom helped manage the area and its islands.

The dispute over who owns the island has lasted for many years. In 1904, Iranian forces replaced a local flag with an Iranian one. This led to many disagreements between different countries and leaders. In 1971, Iran and Sharjah signed an agreement to share the island.

This pact allowed Iran to have troops on the island. However, the United Arab Emirates still asks for talks to settle the ownership. They have even asked the United Nations to help look into the matter.

Today, about 2,131 people live on the island.

Most of these people live in Abu Musa city. Many of the local residents speak a special dialect called Bandari. Living on the island can be hard for some people. There is only one school for about 150 students. Some people must travel to Sharjah to see a doctor for medical help. This shows how important the island is to both the people there and the world around it.
