Telegraph Island is a small, rocky place in the Sultanate of Oman.

It sits inside the Elphinstone Inlet, which is part of Khasab Bay. The island is very small, only 160 meters long and 90 meters wide.

It is located near the Musandam Peninsula. The island is less than 400 meters from the mainland shore. It also sits near a much larger place called Sham Island. The area around the island is filled with high mountains. These mountains are part of a range that meets the Arabian tectonic plate. This meeting of plates creates huge pressure in the rocks.

In the 1800s, the British wanted a fast way to send messages. They needed to connect London to India using telegraph cables. These cables ran under the sea in a long line.

Because signals get weak over long distances, they needed help. They built repeater stations to boost the signals along the path. A repeater station is a place that makes a signal stronger. One of these stations was built on this island in 1864.

The station helped messages travel from Karachi to the Ottoman Empire. This made communication much faster for the British government.

Building the station was a very big job. The Government of India hired a company to make the cable core. A man named Sir Charles Bright was the lead engineer.

It took one month to lay the cable from Gwadar to Musandam. The section from Musandam to Bushire was finished on March 25, 1864. Later, the link to Fao was finished on April 5.

The station used special equipment made by a company called Siemens. It had rooms for the workers and their servants to live in. They even had two large boats for staff to use for breaks.

Life on the island was not easy for the people living there. The summer heat was extremely severe and uncomfortable.

Two people even died due to the harsh conditions. Local tribes were also often hostile toward the workers. Because of this, a gun boat sometimes had to stay near the island. Some people say the heat was so bad it made officers feel desperate. They might want to sail all the way around the bend in the Strait of Hormuz. This journey would take them back to civilization in India.

Today, the island is a quiet place for visitors to explore. The telegraph station was abandoned in the mid-1870s. Now, only the ruins of the station and the old quarters remain.

Visitors can climb the stone steps to look at the old buildings. The water around the island is calm and good for fishing. You can also go snorkeling in the sea. If you are lucky, you might see dolphins swimming near your boat.
