She is known for her amazing skill on the ocean. Ellen loves the sea and wanted to be like her hero, Sophie Burke. She became very well known in 2001. That year, she finished second in a big race called the Vendée Globe. She was the youngest person to ever finish that trip. She was only 24 years old at the time. This great work in sport earned her a special honor called an MBE.

Ellen set many world records during her career.

In June 2000, she sailed from the UK to the USA in just 14 days. This was a record for a woman sailing alone in a single-hull boat. In 2004, she used a trimaran, which is a boat with three hulls. She sailed from the USA to the UK in about 7 days. This beat the previous records for women. She even beat the record for a crewed boat. Her skill showed how fast a single person could travel.
