Ireen did something very special at the Winter Olympics. She won at least one gold medal at five different Olympics. This took sixteen years of hard work. She was the first person to win gold in individual events at five straight Olympics. This feat makes her the second athlete ever to win gold at five consecutive Olympics. Only the British athlete Steve Redgrave had done this before. Wüst is the first to do it in individual events.

Her journey started when she was very young. At age nineteen, she won gold in the 3000 metre event in 2006. This made her the youngest Dutch Olympic gold medalist. She later became the oldest speed skating gold medalist too. In 2014, she was the most decorated athlete at the Sochi Games. She won two gold and three silver medals there. Her career shows how athletes can grow over many years.

Ireen has won many other big titles outside the Olympics. She was a seven-time world allround champion. This means she was the best at many different race distances. She was also a fifteen-time world single distance champion. In 2007, she won the world allround title in Heerenveen. She also won the 1000m and 1500m at the 2007 World Distance Championships. She even broke a national record during that time.

Her most recent big win happened in 2022. At the Beijing Winter Olympics, she won gold in the 1500 metres. This win set a new Olympic record time. It was her sixth speed skating gold medal. She also won a bronze medal in the team pursuit event. Wüst's success links her to the best athletes in the world. She remains a huge name in the sport of speed skating.
