Claudia was born in East Berlin. She became a sergeant in the German Federal Police. She trains at a special sports center in Bad Endorf. In 2002, she set a huge world record. This happened at the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City. She skated the 5000 meter track in 6:46.91. Another skater named Martina Sáblíková broke this record five years later.

Her career had a very hard time in 2009. The International Skating Union accused her of blood doping. This means they thought she used unfair ways to change her blood. They looked at her reticulocyte levels in her blood. These levels were high during some races in 2007 and 2009. The group banned her from racing for two years. Pechstein said this was not true. She believed she had a natural medical condition.

Even after hard years, she never gave up. She competed in eight different Winter Olympics. This is a record for a female athlete. In 2022, she was the flag-bearer for Germany in Beijing. This means she carried the German flag during the opening ceremony. She even thought about becoming a cyclist. She wanted to race in the German Track Championships in Berlin. She said training as a skater helped her on a bike.
