Wüst holds a record thirteen Olympic medals. This total is higher than any other speed skater in the history of the Games. She is also the most successful athlete to ever represent the Netherlands at the Olympics. Her career is defined by incredible consistency and an ability to win at the highest level for many years.

Wüst achieved a feat that few athletes in any sport can claim. She won at least one gold medal at five consecutive Winter Olympic Games.

This achievement makes her the second person ever to win gold at five straight Olympics. The only other person to do this was Steve Redgrave from Great Britain. Notably, Wüst is the first athlete to achieve this streak in individual events. This demonstrates her sustained dominance in solo competition across sixteen years of elite sport.

Her Olympic journey began with a historic victory in 2006. At only nineteen years old, she won the gold medal in the 3000 metre event at the Turin Games. This win made her the youngest Dutch Olympic gold medalist in history. She later became the oldest speed skating gold medalist at the Winter Games as well. In 2014, she was the most decorated athlete at the Sochi Games. During those Games, she earned two gold medals and three silver medals.

Wüst's success in the 1500 metre event is particularly remarkable. At the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, she won gold in the 1500 metres. This was her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in that specific distance. She also became the second speed skater to win the 1500 metres twice. Only Lidiya Skoblikova, who won in 1960 and 1964, had achieved that before. In 2022, she won gold in the 1500 metres again at the Beijing Olympics. This final gold set a new Olympic record time.

Beyond the Olympics, Wüst dominated many international competitions. She was a seven-time world allround champion. An allround champion must perform well across several different race distances. She was also a fifteen-time world single distance champion. This means she was the best in the world at specific distances like the 500m or 1000m. Additionally, she was a five-time European allround champion. Her many titles show her versatility in different types of skating races.

Her professional rise began in the early 2000s. She debuted at the 2004 KNSB Dutch Single Distance Championships. At the end of that season, she won a silver medal at the world junior championships in the USA. She soon moved to senior competitions, qualifying for the 2005 European Championships in Heerenveen. By 2006, she signed a deal with the TVM team and trained under Gerard Kemkers. This period of training led to her first major Olympic success in Turin.

Ireen Wüst's career connects to the broader world of professional sports and endurance. Her ability to remain at the top for nearly two decades is rare. She has reached high positions on the Adelskalender, which is a ranking for allround skaters. She currently holds the 5th position with a score of 156.436 points. Her legacy is built on a combination of technical skill, mental strength, and long-term dedication to her sport.
