Born Oleniuc on October 26, 1964, she represented Romania on the world stage. She is officially the most decorated rower in Olympic history. Her career is defined by an incredible collection of medals. She earned five gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal. These achievements highlight her long-term dedication to the sport of rowing.

Rowing involves different styles of racing in various types of boats. Lipă mastered several distinct disciplines during her career. She competed in sculling events, where each rower uses two oars. She also competed in sweep events, where each rower uses only one oar. Notably, she is the only person to win gold in the two premiere rowing events. These are the single scull and the eight. The eight is a large boat containing eight rowers.

Her ability to win in different styles is very rare. Lipă is one of only a few women to win gold in both sculling and sweep events. Other women who have achieved this include Canada's Kathleen Heddle and Marnie McBean. They did so in 1992 and 1996. More recently, Romanians Simona Radis and Ancuta Bodnar won gold in the double sculls and the eight. These athletes showed the same incredible versatility that Lipă displayed.

Lipă's Olympic journey began when she was just 19 years old. She made her debut at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. In that first appearance, she won a gold medal in the double sculls. Her career showed remarkable longevity and consistency over many decades. She won her most recent gold medal in the eight at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics.

She holds several significant records regarding her time in the sport. There were 20 years between her first gold medal and her last gold medal. This is the record for the most years between gold medals among rowers. In 2004, she also became a pioneer for female athletes. She was the first female rower to compete in six different Olympic Games. She was only the second rower overall to reach this milestone.

Other athletes have reached the milestone of six Olympic appearances. The Czechoslovak rower Jiří Pták, a cox, achieved this in 1992. In 2008, three others reached this mark: Lesley Thompson from Canada, Jüri Jaanson from Estonia, and James Tomkins from Australia. All were coxes, which are the people who steer the boat. Lipă's achievement as a rower remains a unique part of this history. Her excellence was recognized globally in 2008 when she received the Thomas Keller Medal in Lucerne.

After retiring from competitive rowing, Lipă moved into leadership and government roles. She has used her experience to guide sports in Romania. Since 2009, she has served as the president of the Romanian Rowing Federation. She also leads the Dinamo București Sports Club. In 2015, she joined the Cioloș Cabinet. She served as the Romanian Minister of Youth and Sport until January 2017.

Her connection to her roots remains strong despite her international fame. She was born in the town of Siret. In recognition of her success, she became an honorary citizen of her native town. Lipă's life connects the physical discipline of elite sport with the administrative work of government. She transitioned from a world-class athlete to a person who helps shape national sports policy. Her legacy continues through the organizations she leads and the records she set.
