In 2024, the International Sports Press Association voted her the best female gymnast of the past 100 years. She is also considered the second best female athlete across all sports. This recognition highlights her lasting impact on the history of international athletics.

Comăneci's training began with a chance encounter in a schoolyard.

When she was six, coach Béla Károlyi spotted her and a friend performing cartwheels. Károlyi sought young children to train in his experimental gymnastics school. By age seven, Comăneci began formal training in Onești, Romania.

She showed early talent by becoming the youngest gymnast to win the Romanian Nationals at age nine. Her progression continued through various international junior meets against countries like Hungary and Italy. By age 13, she achieved major success at the European Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Norway. These early years built the foundation for her historic Olympic performances.

The defining moment of her career occurred during the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

At just 14 years old, she became the first gymnast awarded a perfect 10.0 score. This score indicated a routine performed without any deductions or errors. Interestingly, the official scoreboard by Omega SA was not programmed to show a 10.0. Consequently, the judges' perfect score appeared on the screen as "1.00."

She went on to earn six more perfect 10s during those same Games. These flawless routines earned her three gold medals in the individual all-around, balance beam, and uneven bars.

Comăneci's career was not without significant physical and emotional challenges.

In the late 1970s, she faced difficult bodily changes as she grew older. During the 1978 World Championships, she was four inches taller and 22 pounds heavier than during the Montreal Olympics. These changes affected her skills, leading to a fourth-place finish in the all-around. In 1979, she faced a serious medical crisis involving blood poisoning from a cut on her wrist.

Despite doctors' orders, she competed on the balance beam to help her team win a gold medal. This moment demonstrated her intense dedication to her sport.

She continued her Olympic success at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

Despite the political tension of the era, she won two more gold medals. She also achieved two more perfect 10s during these competitions. Her ability to perform under pressure helped cement her status as an icon. The Laureus World Sports Academy later named her one of the Athletes of the 20th century. Her consistency across multiple Olympic Games remains a benchmark for gymnasts worldwide.

Comăneci's personal life also intersected with the world of gymnastics.

She first met American gymnast Bart Conner at the 1976 American Cup in Manhattan. They later married in a wedding held in Bucharest after the fall of the Romanian Communist regime. This event was significant enough to be televised live in Romania. Comăneci has lived in the United States since defecting from Romania in 1989. Her transition from a young athlete in a communist state to a global figure in the West is a notable part of her biography.

Beyond her medals, Comăneci's legacy is tied to the evolution of gymnastics rules. Because she won her all-around title at age 14, she holds a record that may never be broken. The sport eventually raised the age-eligibility requirements for Olympic competition. Now, gymnasts must be at least 16 years old in the same calendar year as the Olympics. Her career also inspired a musical theme called "Nadia's Theme." This instrumental piece became a top-10 single in 1976 and was used in various television programs. Her life remains a study in how individual excellence can transform an entire global sport.
