Valentina Vezzali is a highly decorated Italian athlete and politician. She is widely recognized as the greatest women's foilist in the history of fencing. Foil fencing is a specific discipline within the sport of fencing. In this event, competitors use a light, flexible sword called a foil. Vezzali achieved legendary status through her incredible skill and consistency. She is one of only five athletes in Summer Olympic history to win five medals in the same individual event.

Her journey into fencing began during her childhood. Her father provided her first training in the sport. Later, she refined her skills under a sword master named Ezio Triccoli. Fencing requires intense focus and precise movements. Vezzali competed in both individual and team categories. In individual foil, a fencer competes alone to demonstrate personal mastery. In team foil, fencers work together to represent their nation.

Vezzali's competitive history is defined by unprecedented Olympic success. She made history by becoming the first fencer to win three individual foil gold medals at three consecutive Olympic Games. These victories occurred in Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004, and Beijing in 2008. Throughout her Olympic career, she earned nine medals in total. This includes five individual foil medals: three gold, one silver, and one bronze. She also earned four team foil medals: three gold and one bronze.

Her dominance extended far beyond the Olympic arena to the World Fencing Championships. Vezzali was a 16-time World Champion in foil. Her gold medals at the World Championships included six individual titles and ten team titles. She won individual gold medals in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2011. Her team gold medals spanned many years, from 1995 to 2015. She also earned six silver and four bronze medals at the World Championships.

In European competitions, Vezzali was equally successful. She won nine gold medals at the European championships. These included five individual titles and four team titles. She also secured three silver and two bronze medals in European events. Her career spanned several decades of elite competition. She medaled in every Olympic appearance from 1996 to 2012. In 2012, she served as the official flag bearer for the Italian Olympic team in London.

Vezzali holds a significant place in Italian sporting history. She has the fourth-most Olympic medals of any Italian athlete. Among female summer Olympians from Italy, she holds the highest medal count. She sits behind only Edoardo Mangiarotti, Arianna Fontana, and Stefania Belmondo in total Olympic medals. Her massive collection of awards includes 146 individual and 215 team medals across various major championships. This level of achievement reflects her lifelong dedication to the sport.

After retiring from professional fencing, Vezzali transitioned into a career in Italian politics. In 2013, she became a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. She originally joined the Civic Choice party, which was led by Mario Monti. She served in the XVIIth Legislatura between 2013 and 2018. In 2021, she moved into a leadership role as Italy's cabinet undersecretary in charge of sports. In July 2022, she joined the Forza Italia party to continue her political work.
