This great feat showed how much he loved the sea. He proved that one person could face the wide ocean by themselves.

To finish his big trip, he used a small boat. His boat was named Suhaili. It was only 32 feet long. This was one of the smallest boats in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. During the journey, he lost his self-steering gear near Australia. This made the job much harder. Even with this problem, he sailed around Cape Horn in January 1969. He finished his trip in Falmouth on April 22, 1969.
