Joshua's life on the water began with many different steps. He started as a young cabin boy and a cook. Later, he studied hard to pass his official exams. His family lived in a place called Mount Hanley. He was the fifth child in a very large family of eleven. His father made leather boots for local fishermen. Joshua helped in the shop, but he loved the salt air more. When he was sixteen, he left home to work on merchant ships. He traveled to many places like Dublin, Ireland, and San Francisco. He even visited the Maluku Islands and Singapore.

Life at sea brought both joy and hard times to Joshua. He married Virginia Albertina Walker in Sydney in 1871. They had seven children together while traveling the world. Sometimes, his ships faced big dangers like storms or wrecks. In Alaska, he saved his crew from a wreck in a gale. Later, his ship called the "Aquidneck" was wrecked in Brazil. To get home, he built a special boat named "Liberdade." This name means "freedom" in Portuguese.

Even though he is gone, people remember him as a master of the ocean. His life was a true adventure from the start to the end.
