John Philip Holland was a clever engineer who changed how boats work.

He is famous for creating the first submarines used by the US Navy. He also helped create the first submarine for the Royal Navy. His work helped people learn how to travel deep under the ocean. This was a very big deal for the world of science. Without his ideas, underwater travel might have looked very different.

His most successful design was a boat called the Holland VI. This boat was special because it used two different ways to move. It used gasoline engines to travel on top of the water. When it went under the water, it switched to electric motors. This allowed the boat to stay submerged for a long time. This combination of power was a huge step forward for science. It made the submarine much more useful for sailors.

John was born in 1841 in a small cottage in Ireland.

His father worked for the Royal Coastguard Service. As a young man, John worked as a teacher in many places. He eventually moved to the United States in 1873. While he was in a hospital with a broken leg, he worked on his designs. A priest named Isaac Whelan encouraged him during this time. This helped him focus on his dream of building underwater boats.

Many important things happened during his career. In 1875, the US Navy turned down his first designs. However, a group called the Fenians helped pay for his research. He launched a prototype called the Holland I in 1878. The Holland VI was launched on May 17, 1897. The US Navy bought it on April 11, 1900. They officially named it the USS Holland on October 12, 1900.

Today, we can still see the results of his hard work. Some of his early boats are kept in museums. For example, the Holland I is at the Paterson Museum in New Jersey. The Royal Navy's Holland 1 is in a museum in England. His company, the Electric Boat Company, grew into a large business. Even the Japanese Navy used versions of his designs. John spent 56 years of his life working on these amazing machines.
