The name comes from the German word "U-Boot." This is a short way to say "Unterseeboot." These vessels were very important in two major wars.

They were used to attack ships on the ocean. This was often done to stop trade. The goal was to weaken an enemy by cutting off their supplies. U-boats became famous for a style of fighting called unrestricted warfare. This meant they did not give warnings before attacking ships.

Early submarines had to find ways to move both above and below the water.

Many early boats used kerosene engines to move on the surface. Kerosene was safer than gasoline at the time. However, it left a white trail of smoke behind the boat. This smoke made it easy for other ships to see them.

Later, engineers developed diesel engines for these boats. Diesel engines were much better for staying hidden. They allowed the submarines to be more effective at stealth.

These boats also used batteries to move while they were underwater.

Building these boats took many years of testing.

In 1850, Wilhelm Bauer designed a three-man craft called the Brandtaucher. It was lost during a test dive in 1851. Later, in 1903, the Germaniawerft dockyard built the Forelle. This was the first fully functional German submarine. At first, German leaders did not think submarines were important. They preferred to build large, expensive battleships. This changed when Russia ordered three U-boats from Krupp. By 1906, the German Navy began commissioning its own boats like the U-1.

In 1914, Germany had 48 submarines in service or being built. They used them to attack the British fleet and merchant ships. One famous event was the sinking of the RMS Lusitania. This event upset the United States and helped lead them into the war.

To stay safe, the UK started using convoys. Convoys are groups of ships that travel together for protection. By the end of the war, 178 German U-boats had been lost. Many brave sailors lost their lives during these ocean battles.

In World War II, the fighting changed again.

A leader named Karl Dönitz led the U-boat force. He wanted to defeat the UK by attacking their convoys. At first, these tactics worked well in the Battle of the Atlantic. However, the Allies found new ways to fight back. They used tools like high-frequency direction finding. They also used a system called the Hedgehog to find submarines.

In May 1943, a period called "Black May" occurred. During this time, the loss of U-boats became very high. This made it much harder for them to affect shipping.
