He was born on 16 September 1891 in Grünau. His father, Emil Dönitz, was an engineer. Karl joined the Imperial German Navy in 1910. He became an acting sub-lieutenant in 1913. During the First World War, he served on a light cruiser. He later asked to join the submarine forces. He completed training at Flensburg-Mürwik in early 1917.

He commanded the submarine UB-68 in the Mediterranean. In 1918, he commanded the boat UB-110. After technical problems, he had to surface his boat. The British captured him as a prisoner of war. He stayed in a camp near Sheffield until 1919.

After the war, Dönitz continued his naval career. He became a lieutenant in the new German navy in 1921. In 1934, he commanded the cruiser Emden. By 1935, he led a group of three submarines.

He believed that many small boats were better than large ships. He thought the torpedo was the most important weapon. Dönitz developed a special plan for his submarines. He called this the "wolfpack" tactic. This meant several U-boats worked together in a group. They would attack a convoy of ships all at once. This was much more effective than attacking alone. He used new radios to help the boats talk to each other.

During the Second World War, Dönitz held great power. In January 1943, he became the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.

He was a major enemy of the Allied naval forces. This fighting took place mostly in the Battle of the Atlantic. The U-boats fought hard from 1939 until 1945. However, the German navy lost its advantage in May 1943. The war at sea was very dangerous for many people.

He had three children with his wife, Ingeborg Weber. Sadly, both of his sons died during the Second World War. His son Peter died in May 1943 in the North Atlantic. His other son, Klaus, died in May 1944. Klaus had been allowed to leave combat to study medicine. However, he chose to go on a raid with his friends. This was a very difficult time for his family. In April 1945, Dönitz became the head of state for Germany. This happened after Adolf Hitler died. He led the Flensburg Government until the war ended in May 1945.

After the war, Dönitz faced a special court.
