Karl Dönitz was a high-ranking German naval officer and a central political figure during the final months of the Nazi era.

He is primarily known for his leadership of the German U-boat arm during the Second World War. A U-boat is a type of submarine used for naval combat. Dönitz was a dedicated supporter of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. After Hitler committed suicide in April 1945, Dönitz became the head of state for Germany. He led the Flensburg Government until the Allied powers dissolved it in May 1945. His career spanned both World Wars and changed how submarine warfare was conducted.

Dönitz began his naval career in the Imperial German Navy before the First World War. He enlisted in 1910 and was commissioned as an acting sub-lieutenant in 1913. During the First World War, he served on a light cruiser in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1916, he requested a transfer to the submarine forces to become a submariner. He completed his training at Flensburg-Mürwik in early 1917. While commanding the submarine UB-68 in the Mediterranean, he witnessed the challenges of solo patrols.

After technical failures forced him to surface his boat in 1918, he was captured by British forces. He remained a prisoner of war until 1919.

In the years between the wars, Dönitz helped develop new naval strategies. He believed that a large number of small, efficient submarines was better than a few large ships. He argued that the torpedo, rather than the gun, was the most important weapon for a submarine.

To make these boats more effective, he revived a concept called *Rudeltaktik*. This is often called "wolfpack" tactics in English. Instead of operating alone, several U-boats would work together in a group to overwhelm enemy convoys. This strategy relied on new high-frequency radio transmitters to coordinate the attack. Dönitz believed this method could overcome the defensive strength of enemy escorts.

During the Second World War, Dönitz rose to the rank of Grand Admiral in January 1943.

He replaced Erich Raeder as the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy. His main objective was to win the Battle of the Atlantic by attacking Allied shipping. However, the tide of the war changed in May 1943, and the German navy lost its tactical advantage. The fighting was incredibly costly for the German submarine force. Out of 648 U-boats lost during the war, 429 sank with no survivors. Approximately 30,000 of the 40,000 men who served in the U-boat arm perished during these operations.

The war also had a profound and tragic impact on Dönitz's personal life. He and his wife, Ingeborg Weber, had three children.

Both of his sons were killed in action during the Second World War. His son Peter died in May 1943 when his submarine sank in the North Atlantic. His other son, Klaus, died in May 1944 during a raid on Selsey. Although Klaus had been permitted to leave combat roles to study medicine, he chose to join a mission with his friends. These personal losses occurred while Dönitz was managing the high-level naval operations of the German military.

In the final weeks of the war, Dönitz moved from military command to political leadership. Following Hitler's death on April 30, 1945, Dönitz was named the successor as head of state.

He initially led the Goebbels cabinet before it was reformed into the Flensburg Government. On May 7, 1945, he ordered Alfred Jodl to sign the German Instrument of Surrender in Reims, France. This act formally ended the war in Europe. His role as head of state and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces ended when the Allied powers dissolved his government in late May 1945.

After the war, Dönitz was held accountable for his actions during the Nazi regime. He was indicted as a major war criminal at the Nuremberg trials. The prosecution brought three specific counts against him: conspiracy to commit crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

The court found him not guilty of crimes against humanity. However, he was found guilty of crimes against peace and war crimes against the laws of war. He was sentenced to ten years in prison. After his release, he lived near Hamburg until he died in December 1980.

His life remains a significant study of military leadership and political responsibility.
