Karl Albrecht was a prominent German entrepreneur and a pioneer of the discount supermarket model. He co-founded the Aldi grocery chain alongside his brother, Theo Albrecht. Through his business innovations, he became one of the wealthiest individuals in Germany for many years.

His work fundamentally changed how people shop for groceries by focusing on lower prices. This success eventually placed him among the richest people on the entire planet.

The foundation of his business began in the city of Essen, Germany. Karl and Theo were raised in a Catholic family with modest means. Their father, Karl Sr., worked as a miner and a baker's assistant. Their mother, Anna Siepmann, operated a small grocery store in a suburb of Essen. After World War II, the brothers took over their mother's business. They established a company known as Albrecht KG to manage their growing retail interests.

A significant disagreement in 1960 led to the unique structure of the Aldi companies. The brothers could not agree on whether to sell cigarettes in their stores. Theo believed they should stock cigarettes, but Karl worried they would attract shoplifters. To resolve this conflict, they divided their business geographically. Theo took control of all stores located north of the Ruhr region. Karl took control of all stores located south of the Ruhr.

This division resulted in the creation of two distinct entities: Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. The name "Aldi" is a shortened version of "Albrecht Discount."

Karl's leadership evolved over several decades as the company expanded. In 1962, the first official Aldi store opened in Schonnebeck, Essen.

Karl remained deeply involved in the daily operations for many years. In 1994, he stepped back from daily management to become the chairman of the board. He held this leadership position until 2002. By the beginning of 2002, he relinquished his role and gave up all control of the firm. By the 2010s, the business was no longer managed by any members of the Albrecht family.

Karl Albrecht was known for being a very reclusive person. He avoided public life and stayed away from the spotlight for many years. Because of this privacy, very little information is known about his personal life. He reportedly had two children, but neither of them worked for the Aldi company. He lived in Essen, which was also the home of his brother Theo.

Karl spent his time on private interests, such as raising orchids and playing golf. In 1976, he built his own private golf course named Öschberghof.

The scale of his wealth was immense and documented by global financial reports. In 2004, Forbes magazine ranked him as the third-richest man in the world. By 2012, his estimated net worth from 2011 was $28 billion. This made him the tenth-richest billionaire on their list. At age 91, he was the oldest billionaire included in the Top 20 list.

When he passed away on July 16, 2014, he was the richest person in Germany. He was also ranked as the fourth-richest person in all of Europe.

Karl's legacy is tied to the global presence of the discount retail industry. In February 2014, the Hurun Report ranked him as the 21st-richest person in the world. His life spanned almost the entire 20th century, from his birth on February 20, 1920, to his death in 2014. The split between Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd remains a defining feature of the brand. This structure continues to influence how the two branches operate independently today. His journey from a small family grocery store to a global retail empire is a major chapter in business history.
