Michele Ferrero was a highly successful Italian businessman. He transformed a small family business into a global empire. He led the company known as Ferrero SpA. At the time of his death, it was Europe's second-largest confectionery company. This means the company specialized in making sweets and chocolates. His work changed how many people enjoy chocolate products today.

Ferrero's success came from changing traditional recipes. He worked with a man named Francesco Rivella to create something new. They took a traditional paste called gianduja. Then, they added vegetable oil to this paste. This process created the popular chocolate spread known as Nutella. This specific innovation was one of his first major successes. It helped the company grow very quickly.

The company produced many different types of famous brands. These brands included Kinder Chocolate and Kinder Eggs. They also made Ferrero Rocher and Mon Chéri. Other well-known products included Tic Tacs. Each brand became a recognizable part of the Ferrero SpA lineup. These products allowed the company to reach many different types of customers.

Ferrero's life began in Dogliani, Italy. He was born on 26 April 1925. He was the only child of Pietro Ferrero and Piera Cillario. His father, Pietro, had founded the original Ferrero company. This business started as a small bakery and café in Alba, Piedmont. Michele joined the family firm in 1949. He spent the following decades expanding the business from its local roots.

His business achievements led to immense personal wealth. In March 2008, he became the richest person in Italy. His personal wealth reached $26 billion at that time. This amount surpassed the wealth of Silvio Berlusconi. By May 2014, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index ranked him highly. He was listed as the 20th richest person in the entire world.

Ferrero was also a very devoted Catholic. He visited the Lourdes shrine every single year. He expressed his faith within his business environments. He placed a statue of the Madonna in every factory and office. During the 50th anniversary of his company, he spoke about his beliefs. He said the success of Ferrero was owed to Our Lady of Lourdes. He believed that without her, the company could do little.

Leadership of the company eventually passed to the next generation. Starting in 1997, his sons helped lead the firm. Pietro Ferrero Jr. and Giovanni Ferrero co-led the company together. After Pietro died in April 2011, Giovanni became the sole CEO. This transition ensured the family continued to manage the confectionery giant.

Michele Ferrero received several high honors for his work. In 1971, he became a Knight of the Order of Merit for Labour. Later, in 2005, he became a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He lived a long life of significant influence. He died on 14 February 2015 at the age of 89. He passed away at his home in Monte Carlo, Monaco, following a long illness.
