He is widely recognized in journalism as the "F1 Supremo." This nickname reflects his immense influence over the commercial side of Formula One. In 1987, he founded the Formula One Group. This organization controlled the commercial rights to the sport until 2017. His career transformed racing from a series of local events into a massive global business. He achieved this through strategic financial management and the pioneering sale of television rights.

Ecclestone's early life began in St Peter South Elmham, Suffolk, in 1930. He was the son of Sidney Ecclestone, a fisherman, and Bertha Sophia Westley. After moving to Bexleyheath, southeast London, in 1938, he worked in a chemical laboratory. He tested gas purity at a local gasworks after leaving school at age 16. His passion for machines led him to study chemistry and pursue motorcycle interests. Following World War II, he began his business career by trading motorcycle parts. This early experience in commerce provided the foundation for his future success in the automotive industry.

His transition into professional racing involved both driving and management. Ecclestone competed in Formula Three races starting in 1949. He achieved several wins at the Brands Hatch circuit while driving a Cooper Mk V. He later attempted to enter the Monaco and British Grands Prix as a privateer. However, he did not qualify for these prestigious events. Following these experiences, he moved into driver management. He managed drivers such as Stuart Lewis-Evans and Jochen Rindt. Rindt eventually won the World Drivers' Championship posthumously in 1970 after a fatal crash at the Monza circuit.

In 1971, Ecclestone transitioned from manager to team owner. He purchased the Brabham racing team from Ron Tauranac for approximately $120,000.

He operated the team for 15 years, leading them to 22 victories. Under his leadership, the team secured two World Drivers' Championship titles with Nelson Piquet. In 1974, he co-founded the Formula One Constructors' Association, known as FOCA. He worked alongside figures like Frank Williams and Max Mosley. This group advocated for the rights and control of the racing teams within the sport.

As an executive, Ecclestone utilized complex legal and financial agreements to maintain power. The Concorde Agreement, established in 1987, was a central mechanism for his control. Under this agreement, Ecclestone's companies managed the administration, setup, and logistics of every Grand Prix. He also negotiated the fourth Concorde Agreement in 1997 to secure television rights in exchange for annual payments. Even when banks like JPMorgan Chase and Lehman Brothers sued for more control in 2004, Ecclestone remained influential. He eventually sold the Formula One Group to Liberty Media in 2017.

After the sale, he served as chairman emeritus until 2020.

Ecclestone's tenure was also marked by significant efforts to improve racing safety. In 1978, he hired Sid Watkins as the official Formula One medical doctor. Following a serious crash at the 1978 Italian Grand Prix, Watkins demanded better safety measures. Ecclestone implemented these improvements at the very next race. These changes helped decrease the frequency of deaths and serious injuries over several decades. However, his career also included moments of human error and controversy. During the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, a radio misunderstanding led him to incorrectly inform Ayrton Senna's family that the driver had died. This error caused a long-standing rift with the Senna family.

Beyond the racetrack, Ecclestone engaged in diverse business ventures. He founded International Sportsworld Communicators in 1996 to manage World Rally Championship rights. He also co-owned the football club Queens Park Rangers from 2007 to 2011. During this time, he helped oversee the club's promotion to the Premier League. In 2002, he was ranked fifth on the Sunday Times Rich List. His legal history also includes a 2023 conviction for tax fraud at Southwark Crown Court. He was sentenced to 17 months in prison, though the sentence was suspended for two years. His life remains a complex study of business, sport, and global influence.
