He is most famous for his incredible skill in Formula One racing. During his career, he won three World Drivers' Championship titles. He also secured 25 Grand Prix victories across 13 different seasons. At the time of his retirement, he held the record for 54 podium finishes. A podium is when a driver finishes in the top three positions. Lauda remains a unique figure in history. He is the only driver to win a World Championship with both Ferrari and McLaren.

Lauda's journey to the top required immense personal risk and financial courage. He began his career in karting before moving into Formula Vee. When his racing career stalled, he took a bold step. He secured a £30,000 bank loan to join the March team in 1971. This allowed him to compete in European Formula Two. Later, he took another bank loan to join the BRM team in 1973. His talent eventually caught the eye of Enzo Ferrari. After a teammate, Clay Regazzoni, spoke highly of him, Ferrari signed him in 1974. This move helped Lauda clear his significant racing debts.

Lauda's time with Ferrari brought massive success and intense competition. In 1975, he won his first World Drivers' Championship. He drove the Ferrari 312T to victory in several races. During that season, he became the first person to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under seven minutes. This was a massive achievement due to the track's great length. In 1976, he dominated the early season by winning four of the first six races. He was attempting to become the first driver since 1963 to win the most races in a single season. However, his season was interrupted by a life-threatening accident.

This victory was especially impressive because of the time elapsed. There were seven years between his second and third championships. This set a new record for the longest gap between title wins in Formula One history. He finally retired after the 1985 season with a career total of 24 pole positions.
