He competed in Formula One from 1980 to 1993. Many fans gave him the nickname "the Professor." This name reflected his intelligent and calculated approach to racing. During his career, Prost won four Formula One World Drivers' Championship titles. At the time of his retirement, he held several major records. He had 51 career wins and 41 fastest laps. He also achieved 106 podium finishes, which are top-three race results.

Prost began his journey in karting at the age of 14. He used money saved from working in his father's furniture shop to buy his first kart. He quickly found success in junior racing. In 1976, he won the Formula Renault National Championship. He followed this by winning the Challenge de Formule Renault Europe in 1977. He also won the French Formula Three Championship in 1978 and 1979. His victory in the 1979 FIA European Formula 3 Championship marked the peak of his junior career. These successes helped him attract interest from major Formula One teams.

Prost made his Formula One debut with McLaren in 1980. In his very first race in Buenos Aires, he finished sixth. This was a rare achievement, as only two other drivers scored points in their maiden races during that era. After one season, he moved to the Renault team in 1981. He earned his first Grand Prix victory at his home race in France. In 1983, he finished as the runner-up in the World Drivers' Championship. However, a turbo failure in the final race cost him the title. Renault fired him only two days after the season ended due to his critical comments about the car.

Prost returned to McLaren in 1984 and faced intense competition. He finished the 1984 season as runner-up to Niki Lauda. The margin was only a record half-point. This occurred because a race in Portugal was stopped halfway through due to heavy rain. Under regulations, Prost received only half of the usual nine points for his lead. In 1985, Prost won his first World Drivers' Championship. This made him the first French driver to ever win the title.

One of the most famous periods of his career involved his teammate, Ayrton Senna. In 1988, the two drove for McLaren using the Honda-powered MP4/4. They won almost every Grand Prix that season. However, their relationship was defined by a fierce rivalry. This rivalry led to famous collisions between the two drivers at the Suzuka circuit in 1989 and 1990. Prost won the championship in 1989, while Senna took the title in 1990.

Prost also drove for the Ferrari team in 1990. He was dismissed from Ferrari after making comments regarding the 643 car model. After a one-year break, he joined Williams in 1993. That year, he won his fourth and final World Drivers' Championship.

His career was filled with different team dynamics and technical challenges. He moved between major manufacturers like Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and Williams. Each move brought new cars and different teammates to navigate.

After retiring from Formula One, Prost remained very active in motorsport. He owned the Prost Grand Prix team from 1997 to 2002. He also held an advisory role at Renault, which later became Alpine. Prost found success in other types of racing as well. He was a three-time champion of the Andros Trophy ice racing series.
