Clark's career began with local road rallying and hillclimbing. He started by driving his own Sunbeam-Talbot in local events. By 1958, he was racing for the Border Reivers team. He drove cars like the Jaguar D-Type and the Porsche 356. These national competitions helped him attract the attention of Colin Chapman. Chapman was the founder of the famous Lotus racing team. In 1959, Clark finished second-in-class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This performance helped him move into Formula Junior and Formula Two.

Clark made his Formula One debut at the 1960 Dutch Grand Prix. He drove for Lotus alongside teammates like Innes Ireland. His early career included several podium finishes in various races. In 1962, he achieved his first Grand Prix victory at the Belgian Grand Prix. He drove through thick fog and rain to win that race. This victory proved his ability to handle difficult driving conditions. Following this, he began a period of intense competition and success.

Winning championships was a defining part of Clark's professional life. He won two Formula One World Drivers' Championships. His first title came in 1963 while driving the Lotus 25. During that season, he won seven out of ten races. He won his second title in 1965 using the Lotus 33. That year was historically unique for his career. He won the Indianapolis 500 using a Lotus 38. He was the first non-American to win that race in 49 years. He is the only driver to win both the Indy 500 and the Formula One title in a single season.

Clark's records were remarkably durable over many decades. At the time of his death, he held several major Formula One records. He had 25 race wins and 33 pole positions. He also held the record for 28 fastest laps. His pole position record lasted until 1989. His fastest lap record also stood until 1989. He still holds the record for the most grand slams with eight.

Beyond Formula One, Clark dominated other racing series. He was a three-time champion of the Tasman Series. He won those titles in 1965, 1967, and 1968. In 1968, he won the Australian Grand Prix by only 0.1 seconds. This was the closest finish in the history of that race. He also won the British Saloon Car Championship in 1964. He won every single race he entered during that championship year.

Racing was often a dangerous and difficult profession. In 1961, Clark was involved in a collision at Monza. The accident involved driver Wolfgang von Trips and resulted in several deaths. Clark was investigated but the charges were later dropped. Later, in 1968, Clark died during a Formula Two race. The accident occurred at the Hockenheimring while he was leading the championship.
