He became a global icon through his diverse roles in motion pictures. Connery is most famous for being the first actor to portray the fictional British secret agent James Bond. He starred in seven Bond films produced by Eon Productions between 1962 and 1983. These films included classics like Dr. No, Goldfinger, and Thunderball. His portrayal of Bond helped define the character for generations of moviegoers.

Connery's path to stardom began with a variety of manual labor jobs in Scotland.

He worked as a milkman for the St. Cuthbert's Co-operative Society. He also served as a lorry driver and a lifeguard at Portobello swimming baths. During his youth, he even worked as a coffin polisher and an artist's model. These jobs helped him support himself before his acting career took flight. His physical strength was notable, as he was a competitive bodybuilder and a skilled footballer. He was once offered a professional football contract worth £25 a week. However, at age 23, he chose to pursue acting instead of sports.

His formal journey into the performing arts started in musical theatre. In 1953, he landed a small role as a Seabee chorus boy in the production of South Pacific. He worked his way up from a minor part to the featured role of Lieutenant Buzz Adams. During this time, he developed a deep interest in serious literature and theatre. An actor named Robert Henderson introduced him to the works of Henrik Ibsen. Henderson also encouraged Connery to take elocution lessons to refine his speaking voice. These lessons helped him transition from musical stages to professional film sets.

Connery's early film career involved many small and supporting roles. He appeared as an extra in the 1954 musical Lilacs in the Spring. He later played a minor gangster in the film No Road Back. In 1957, he took on a leading role in the BBC production Requiem for a Heavyweight. He also appeared in the melodrama Another Time, Another Place alongside Lana Turner.

During the filming of that movie, a tense moment occurred when a man named Johnny Stompanato pointed a gun at Connery. Connery successfully disarmed him and knocked him to the ground. This event was one of many moments that showcased his physical presence on screen.

As his career progressed, Connery worked with many legendary film directors. He appeared in films directed by Alfred Hitchcock, such as Marnie in 1964.

He also collaborated with Sidney Lumet and John Huston. His filmography includes a wide range of genres, from historical dramas to action adventures. He starred in The Name of the Rose in 1986 and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. Other notable films included The Hunt for Red October and The Rock. He continued acting into his later years, appearing in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003.

Connery's talent earned him many of the highest honors in the entertainment industry. In 1987, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in The Untouchables. This achievement made him the first Scottish actor to win a major Oscar. That same year, he won a Golden Globe for the same role. He also received a BAFTA Award for Best Actor for The Name of the Rose. Beyond acting, he won a Tony Award for Best Play as a producer in 1998. His excellence in the arts was recognized through many honorary titles and fellowships.

His contributions to culture were recognized by world leaders and international organizations. In 2000, Queen Elizabeth II made him a knight for his services to drama. He was also named a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in France. These honors reflected his status as a significant figure in global cinema.
