Guinness's early life in London was marked by some mystery. He was born Alec Guinness de Cuffe in Maida Vale in 1914. His mother was Agnes Cuff, who had worked as a barmaid. The identity of his father was never officially confirmed. Some people believed he was related to the Guinness family because of a physical resemblance. Guinness himself believed his father was a Scottish banker named Andrew Geddes. Geddes paid for Guinness's education at boarding schools in Southbourne and Eastbourne. Geddes occasionally visited Guinness and his mother while posing as an uncle.

During the Second World War, Guinness paused his acting career to serve his country. He joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1941. He eventually earned a commission as a temporary Sub-lieutenant in 1942. By 1943, he was promoted to the rank of Temporary Lieutenant. He commanded a Landing Craft Infantry during the invasion of Sicily. He also worked in the eastern Mediterranean theatre, ferrying supplies and agents to Yugoslav partisans. Even during the war, he found moments to perform. He appeared in the Broadway production of Flare Path while on leave.

Guinness's impact on the industry can be seen through specific achievements and numbers. In 1951, a poll of British exhibitors named him the top box office attraction in British films. He was also ranked fifth in international films based on box office returns. His work helped bridge the gap between classical theater and modern film. He was one of several great British actors, including Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud, who successfully transitioned to cinema after the war. His later television work, such as playing George Smiley in BBC series, also defined a new era of acting.

His legacy is preserved through various honors and lasting cultural connections. In 1960, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was later given an Academy Honorary Award for lifetime achievement in 1980. He also received the BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award in 1989. Even after his death in 2000, his influence remains visible in the films and plays he touched. He is remembered as a master of characterization who could inhabit almost any role.
