Acting was a family tradition for Gielgud. He belonged to the Terry family, a theatrical dynasty. This means many of his relatives were famous performers. His cousin, Phyllis Neilson-Terry, gave him his first paid work in 1922. He later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, also known as RADA.

At RADA, he studied under teachers like Claude Rains. He began his career in repertory theatre. This involves an acting company performing many different plays in rotation. One role he loved was Trofimov in The Cherry Orchard. This performance helped him feel like a true professional.

His early life involved many different subjects. Gielgud attended Hillside preparatory school in Surrey. He played roles like Mark Antony in Julius Caesar while there. Later, he attended Westminster School in London. He enjoyed the ritual of singing in the school choir. His parents were frequent theatregoers. However, they did not want him to be an actor. His father suggested he might prefer an architect's office. Gielgud had to persuade them to let him take drama lessons.

Later in his life, Gielgud found great success in cinema. He did not take film seriously during his early career. He made his first film in 1924. However, he began a regular film career in his sixties. He appeared in more than sixty films. These included the movie Becket, for which he received an Academy Award nomination.
