Tracy's path to stardom involved several distinct stages of training and work. He first discovered his talent while attending Ripon College. He later earned a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA). After graduating from AADA in March 1923, he worked in various stock companies. A stock company is a group of actors that performs a series of plays. He also performed on Broadway, the famous theater district in New York City. During his early years, money was very scarce. He and his friend Pat O'Brien often lived on meals of just rice and pretzels.

His professional breakthrough occurred through a specific sequence of theatrical successes. In 1926, he worked in a play called Yellow by George M. Cohan. Cohan was a very important figure in American theater. Cohan praised Tracy's acting and even wrote a part specifically for him in The Baby Cyclone. However, the stock market crash of 1929 prevented his play Dread from opening on Broadway. His true turning point came in January 1930 with the play The Last Mile. He played a murderer on death row. His performance received a standing ovation that lasted for 14 curtain calls.

This stage success led directly to his transition into motion pictures. Director John Ford saw Tracy in The Last Mile and wanted him for a film. Although Fox Film Corporation was initially unsure about Tracy, Ford convinced them to hire him. Tracy made his film debut in the movie Up the River in 1930. He starred in this film alongside Humphrey Bogart. Because he needed money for his family, Tracy signed a long-term contract with Fox. This moved him from the stage to the film industry in California.
