The James Bond franchise is a massive collection of stories centered on a fictional British Secret Service agent.

Created by writer Ian Fleming in 1953, the character is known by the code number 007. Bond serves as an intelligence officer within the Secret Intelligence Service, which is commonly called MI6. He is also described as a Royal Naval Reserve Commander. Beyond books, the character has been adapted into television, radio, comic strips, video games, and films. This media presence has made James Bond one of the highest-grossing media franchises in history.

To create the character, Ian Fleming used many real-life inspirations from his own experiences. During the Second World War, Fleming served in the Naval Intelligence Division and the 30 Assault Unit. He admitted that Bond was a "compound" of the secret agents and commando types he met during that time. He drew traits from people like his brother, Peter Fleming, and others such as Conrad O'Brien-ffrench and Duško Popov. Recent research has even identified Bronisław Urbański, a Polish "liquidator," as a possible physical and operational model. Skarbek, who introduced Fleming to Urbański, reportedly provided details about Urbański's physical scars to help shape Bond's appearance.

Fleming also infused Bond with his own personal habits and tastes. The character shares Fleming's love for golf, gambling, and a specific brand of toiletries. Even their breakfast preferences are the same, as both enjoyed scrambled eggs. Fleming even used his own golf handicap for the character. Interestingly, the name "James Bond" was not chosen for its excitement. Fleming took the name from an American ornithologist, a bird expert who wrote a guide to the birds of the West Indies. Fleming wanted a name that sounded simple, dull, and plain. He felt a neutral, anonymous name would allow exotic adventures to happen around a blunt, masculine figure.

The literary history of Bond began at Fleming's Goldeneye estate in Jamaica.

He began writing his first novel, *Casino Royale*, on February 17, 1952. Fleming published twelve novels and two short-story collections between 1953 and 1966. Although Fleming died in 1964, the series continued through authorized authors. Since then, eight writers have expanded the Bond universe. These include Kingsley Amis, John Gardner, Raymond Benson, and Anthony Horowitz. Recent works include Charlie Higson's *On His Majesty's Secret Service*, published in May 2023. These authors have written both new adventures and novelizations of the films.

The film franchise is one of the longest continually running series in cinema history.

It officially began in 1962 with the movie *Dr. No*, starring Sean Connery. Within the Eon Productions series, there have been twenty-five films produced. While there have been two independent productions, such as the 1967 spoof *Casino Royale*, the Eon series remains the primary continuity. The films are famous for their high production values and iconic elements. These include Bond's specialized cars, his weaponry, and various gadgets provided by a department called Q Branch. The films are also noted for their musical scores, with three theme songs winning Academy Awards.

Many different actors have stepped into the role of 007 to define different eras of the character.

Sean Connery was the first to portray Bond in the Eon series. In the most recent era, Daniel Craig has played the role in five different films. Craig is the sixth actor to play Bond within the Eon Productions continuity. His final portrayal was in the 2021 film *No Time to Die*. The films have reached massive financial success, grossing over US$7.04 billion at the global box office. This total makes James Bond the fifth-highest-grossing film series of all time.

James Bond connects various forms of storytelling and cultural elements into a single cohesive mythos. The character's identity is built through a mix of historical espionage reality and fictionalized adventure. The franchise bridges the gap between literature and massive cinematic spectacles. By using real-world intelligence details and blending them with high-tech gadgets, the series creates a unique sense of realism. Whether through the written word of Anthony Horowitz or the visual spectacle of an Aston Martin DB5, the franchise remains a powerful example of character-driven storytelling.
