The series follows a fictional British archaeologist named Lara Croft. She is a highly intelligent, athletic, and elegant character. Lara travels across the globe to find forgotten artifacts and ancient locations. Many of these sites are linked to supernatural powers. The franchise includes video games, film adaptations, comics, and novels. It has become a significant part of modern pop culture.

Gameplay in the series requires a specific set of skills and actions. Players must explore vast, complex environments to find hidden paths. Solving intricate puzzles is a core mechanic used to progress through levels. Players must also navigate hostile areas that are filled with dangerous traps. Combat is another major element, as characters must fight various enemies. This combination of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat creates a sense of constant discovery.

The franchise is organized into several distinct eras or trilogies. The original series began with the first game in 1996. This was followed by titles like Tomb Raider II and Tomb Raider III. Later, the Legend trilogy started in 2006 with the game Tomb Raider: Legend. This era included a remake called Tomb Raider: Anniversary. A second reboot, known as the Survivor trilogy, began in 2013. This trilogy includes Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The history of the franchise is marked by significant changes in development. British developer Core Design began work on the first game in 1994. After the 1996 release, the games were a massive commercial success. This success led Core Design to release a new game every year for four years. This intense schedule put a heavy strain on the staff. The sixth game, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, faced many difficulties. It was considered a failure upon its release in 2003. Consequently, Eidos transferred development duties to the American studio Crystal Dynamics. Crystal Dynamics has served as the primary developer for the main series since that time.

The financial and cultural impact of the series is immense. By the year 2024, the series had sold over 100 million units worldwide. The entire franchise generated nearly $1.2 billion in revenue by 2002. Lara Croft has become one of the most recognizable video game characters in history. Her fame has earned her places on the Walk of Game and in the Guinness World Records.

Many different types of spin-off games exist within the franchise. Some were developed specifically for handheld devices like the Game Boy Color. These included titles such as Tomb Raider: Curse of the Sword. Other spin-offs focus on the character Lara Croft specifically. The Lara Croft subseries includes titles like Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. There are even mobile games like Lara Croft: Relic Run and Lara Croft Go. Some content even appears in other games, such as an expansion for PowerWash Simulator.

Lara Croft's character design has remained remarkably consistent despite many revisions. She is always portrayed as the sole daughter and heir of the aristocratic Croft family. Her classic outfit consists of a turquoise singlet, light brown shorts, and tall white socks. She often wears fingerless gloves, a utility belt, and carries twin pistols.
