He was a driver capable of mastering many different types of racing vehicles. His career spanned several major disciplines, including Formula One and IndyCar racing. He also found success in stock car racing and endurance racing. Andretti achieved 111 official victories on major circuits throughout his long career. This immense success made his name synonymous with speed in American popular culture.

Andretti's journey began with a deep, personal connection to the sensation of driving. He described the feeling of an engine shuddering and a wheel coming to life as indescribable. In his youth, he and his twin brother Aldo raced hand-crafted wooden cars through the streets of Montona. They later worked at a local garage to learn more about automobiles. To fund their early racing, the twins worked at a Sunoco station. They used their earnings to refurbish a 1948 Hudson for racing. They even used a stolen beer barrel as a makeshift fuel tank.

Before reaching the highest levels of the sport, Andretti climbed a specific racing ladder. He started with midget cars in the American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) series. He eventually graduated to larger sprint cars in the United States Auto Club (USAC) series. In 1964, he made his debut in the USAC Championship Car series, also known as IndyCar. He initially struggled to find a full-time seat in the top tier. However, he impressed mechanic Clint Brawner at Langhorne Speedway. This performance helped him secure a spot with the Dean Van Lines Racing Division.

Andretti's life was shaped by significant historical displacement and migration. He was born in 1940 in the Kingdom of Italy, in a region called Istria. After World War II, the Treaty of Paris in 1947 transferred his home territory to Yugoslavia. This caused the Istrian–Dalmatian exodus, forcing his family to leave their land. They spent seven years living in a refugee camp in Lucca, Italy. In 1955, the family emigrated to the United States with only $125 in cash. They settled in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, which provided the opportunity for Mario to pursue racing.

His achievements in Formula One are among the most significant in the sport's history. Andretti drove for world-class teams including Lotus, Ferrari, and Alfa Romeo. In 1978, he won the Formula One World Drivers' Championship while driving for Lotus. He achieved this title by securing six victories during that season. He was only the second driver from the United States to win this championship. Over his Formula One career, he recorded 12 wins and 18 pole positions. He also earned 10 fastest laps and 19 podium finishes.

In American racing, Andretti set remarkable records that demonstrated his incredible longevity. He won the Indianapolis 500 in 1969 and earned four IndyCar National Championship titles. He returned to full-time IndyCar racing in 1982 after his Formula One years. In 1993, he won a race at Phoenix at the age of 53. This victory made him the oldest winner in IndyCar history at that time. He also became the first driver to win races in four different decades. He retired from IndyCar with 52 wins and 141 podium finishes.

Racing became a multi-generational legacy for the Andretti family. His sons, Michael and Jeff, both followed in his footsteps as professional racing drivers. Michael Andretti won the CART title in 1991. The family's influence continues through organizations like Andretti Global. Mario himself remains involved in the sport through his work with Cadillac in Formula One. In 2000, his lifelong contributions were recognized by his induction into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
