He is recognized as one of the most successful drivers in the history of American open-wheel racing. During the CART era, he secured 42 race victories. This total represents the most wins in the CART era and the fifth-most in all of racing history. In 1991, he achieved the highest honor by winning the CART PPG Indy Car World Series championship.

Andretti's journey began with a long period of training in karts. He competed in 75 races over eight years and won 50 of them. This early success allowed him to move into larger racing cars. In 1980, he obtained his SCCA National License. He quickly climbed the ranks through various racing categories. He won the SCCA Northeast Division Formula Ford championship in 1981. In 1982, he won the Robert Bosch US Formula Super Vee Championship. He later won the FIA Formula Mondial North American Cup the following year.

Racing is a deeply rooted family tradition for the Andrettis. Michael was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1962. His father, Mario Andretti, was a legendary four-time IndyCar champion and a Formula One champion.

The family's connection to the sport is vast. Michael's brother, Jeff, competed in IndyCar. His cousin, John Andretti, raced in IndyCar and NASCAR. His nephew, Marco Andretti, debuted in the IndyCar Series in 2006. The Andretti family was the first to have five members compete in the same racing series.

Michael and Mario often shared the track as teammates. They achieved several historic milestones together. They were the first father and son to start on the same front row. This happened at the 1986 Dana 200 for Special Olympics in Phoenix. They also achieved 15 father-son podium finishes. A podium finish means a driver finishes in the top three positions of a race. Their last shared podium occurred at the 1992 Daikyo IndyCar Grand Prix.

Despite his many wins, Michael faced significant challenges at the Indianapolis 500. This event is often associated with the "Andretti curse" due to the family's misfortune there. Michael holds the record for leading the most laps in the Indianapolis 500 without winning. In 1992, he dominated the race and held a two-lap lead. However, his fuel pump failed with only 11 laps remaining. He was eventually classified in 13th place. He also experienced retirements while leading in 1989, 1995, and 2003.

In 1993, Andretti moved to the prestigious Formula One series. He signed with the Marlboro McLaren team to partner with Ayrton Senna.

This transition was difficult due to new technical regulations. The rules limited the number of laps drivers could take during practice sessions. He was allowed only 23 laps in the morning session and 12 laps in qualifying. These restrictions made it harder to learn unfamiliar tracks. During this period, he experienced several collisions, including a large crash at Interlagos.

Since retiring from driving, Michael has transitioned into the role of a team owner. He manages Andretti Autosport, a highly successful racing organization. Under his leadership, the team has won four IndyCar Series championships. They have also secured five victories at the Indianapolis 500.
